When it comes to pubic hair, women tend to have different preferences. Some women prefer shaving the bikini area completely, others just trim and there are a few who shave some of the pubic hair and leave the others.
If you have decided to shave your bikini area and you are looking for instructions to shave it safely and effectively you are at the right place. In this guide you will learn the proper, effective and safe way to shave your bikini area. You will learn how to shave your pubic hair without nicks, cuts and skin burns.
- Select the Right Tools for the Job:
Shaving your bikini area properly, without damaging the skin is not as difficult as it seems if you have the right equipment – that includes razors, scissors, shaving cream and post shave oils or other moisturizers.
- Razor Selection:
There is a wide range of razors available in market. You can select the one which meets your requirement. Some of these are specifically made for bikini line shaving. These are small razors but they are extremely effective as they are designed for bikini area only. If you want to go completely bare, you should go for these specially designed razors. If you do not want to be bare completely, you can use the bigger razors and epilators. Any of these epilators will do just fine. The general rule is to use a good quality razor that comes with additional protective features for example: multiple blades, moisturizing strips and cushions. You will be working on a delicate area so these protective features will certainly help in making the process more smooth and easy going.(Word of caution, do not forget to sterilize the razor first before using.)
- Shaving Cream:
You certainly don’t want to shave your bikini area without using a shaving cream. Shaving without a lubricant not only makes the process more difficult and cumbersome, it also damages your skin.
Bikini area is very delicate, so if you will shave without a good shaving cream it will result in a lot of nicks and cuts.
Genital area is very sensitive so make your choice carefully while selecting a shaving cream (more on it later in the article).
- Post Shave Oils:
Once you are done shaving your bikini area, a good post shave oil will make your skin fresh and smooth. So select a good aftershave for your bikini area and apply in small quantity after you are done with the shave.
- Trim First, Shave Later:
If you have shorter pubic hair, this step is not for you. Women with pubic hair that are a bit longer should first trim the hair and then start shaving. Shaving becomes more easy and comfortable if you have shorter hair.
A good scissor or a hair trimmer in conjunction with a fine toothed comb can be used to shorten the pubic hair. Again, be very careful while using the scissors.
- Get into Water For a Few Minutes:
Now that you have selected the right equipment and already trimmed and shortened your hair, get into lukewarm water for a few minutes. Warm water will relax the follicles and shaving will become a whole lot effective as the hair will yield easier to the blade.
- Exfoliate
Dermatologists recommend exfoliating before you begin to shave. It makes the skin softer and helps to pop hairs up a bit. Exfoliating makes shaving more effective because you can shave more closely to the roots.
Use a soft exfoliating mitt and gently rub between your legs. If you don’t have a mitt, a soft cloth will do just fine.
- Apply the Shaving Cream:
As we already mentioned in step 1, lubricants are a must if you want to avoid cuts and skin burn. Application of shaving cream makes hair soft and makes the job of razor a hundred times easier.
Dermatologists recommend using unscented shaving creams as the scented ones tend to cause irritation in the skin. If you want to go all organic, you can use coconut or olive oil but it is better to avoid them as they can clog your skin pores.
- Shave Gently in the Direction of Hair:
Wet the razor with warm water and start shaving in the direction of hair. It will prevent the ingrown strands and will also help to avoid cuts and nicks. Stretching your skin gently will also aid in effective shaving and you will be able to shave more close to the roots.
Avoid shaving the same area too many times as you can cut the surface skin by doing so. It is also one of the causes of skin irritation.
While shaving apply and reapply the shaving cream where needed. You will also have to unclog the razor so keep a bowl full of warm water to rinse out the trapped hair.
- Apply a moisturizer after shave
Once you are done shaving your bikini area, apply small amount of moisturizer to soothe the skin. You can use Aloe Vera gel or any other light moisturizer for this purpose.
