The Dual Layer Topper developed by Sleep Innovations is one of the most generous mattress toppers out there, as it is 4-inch thick and provides more memory foam benefits than many mattresses of this same kind, that comprise smaller layers of memory foam. Sleep Innovations is one of the best brands developing memory foam, not in vain this topper is one of the best rated and sold in the market.
The topper is covered with a removable breathable mesh cover. You can remove it from the mattress for washing, so even if you cover and compact the whole mattress with a set of sheets, you will not have a hard time to clean the topper whenever you need.
This memory foam topper is available in several different sizes, so you can have it either on your California king size bed or for a twin bed and all sizes in between these two extremes. Sleep Innovations offers a 10-years limited warranty for the topper!

LUCID is another top brand developing memory foam mattresses, so their toppers could not fall short of expectation compared to their mattresses. Probably the only let down of this model is the fact it is not made with gel memory foam, instead, a standard viscoelastic memory foam fiber patented by the brand.
LUCID has great gel for their mattresses and they also have a gel memory foam topper that is not as popular as this one, probably because it doesn’t have the same ventilated technology – in case you are interested anyway on that model, you can check it here .
Both the Ventilated topper and the LUCID Gel topper are available on several different sizes, from Twin to California King.

Similar to the Sleep Innovations model, this Cloud9 has a gel memory foam oriented build, but different from that model, Cloud9 developed the whole mattress with a gel infused memory foam. It is though also a shorter model, 3-inch thick.
As it is a full gel foam, the comfort provided by Cloud9 topper is quite unique in the market. While this brand is not well known for their mattresses, this topper is among one of the most popular of its kind and is likewise highly rated.
The brand also claims they don’t make use of any kind of chemicals to improve quality and resistance, the same that are considered toxic and poisoning, so it is a free go for your health. Like all previous models of our list, you will find this topper available for several different bed sizes.

Advanced is another brand that invests in the same kind single layer topper design for this model, while they also have another topper version less popular, made of only the standard viscoelastic memory foam. Their product is also a 2-inch thick topper layer, but a low-density gel memory foam, so this is more oriented for people lightweight as it may become too soft for heavy people.
The other version of Advanced’s memory foam topper is also 2 inches thick and has a lower cost, though it doesn’t work as a cooler surface as the gel one. You can also find either version of this topper available in several different sizes and the brand also has a memory foam mattress with a 3-inch gel memory foam layer, the Advanced’s Pearl Gel.
It is not as popular as their toppers but is also high-rated by customers.

This Zinus model is among the best sellers of mattress toppers, this success is mostly due to the fact this is one of the best cost benefits toppers you can get. The bigger size of this model can cost just a bit more than half the price of other models we have seen in this list and, on the other hand, it still provides a gel memory foam layer, so it is tie to tie with many toppers we have just seen. Zinus is also a renowned brand, they have many memory foam mattresses very well rated in the market, so purchasing one of their toppers is a guarantee you will have something with a tradition on high quality memory foam.
It is all made in gel memory foam and, perhaps one of the only let downs compared to other models, is the absence of a protective cover, so you will have to keep it safe with a good set of sheets.
Like the LUCID topper, Zinus also has a standard viscoelastic memory foam of this topper which doesn’t include gel, but is made with a ventilated design. It has a lower cost obviously, but anything else remains the same, including thickness and the availability for different sized beds.
Milliard Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper
The brand also claims the design has a micro pores air flow technology to help it cool down even more besides its already cooling gel source. This topper is also a high-rate memory foam topper and you can find it on 4 different sizes: Twin, Full, Queen and King.

This next topper is a #1 bestseller on Amazon, not only because it has a quite accessible price as it is on promotional sale for a while, but also because it is able to deliver a great product for such a price. The Gel Swirl is a very simple design with infused layer, 2-inch thick. It includes a protective cover and can be placed also in many different bed sizes, from Twin to California King. DreamFoam is also quite vocal on saying it doesn’t include any of the well known toxic chemicals that can be part of product formulas to make them more resistant. This is also a medium to low-density topper.image source: lucidmattress.com
For a quite short amount of money, you can get one of the most interesting foam toppers in the market, developed by LUCID, which toppers we have already seen two models here. The Lavender is not only a topper with a different color but also a product with a quite different pattern surface. Since this is not a gel memory foam, the solution provided by LUCID here to keep the topper quite ventilated and fresh is the several different furrows. They not only make the surface breathable as they also help to alleviate the pressure over different zones of your body while you are lying since there are five different pattern zones.
The last topper on our list is the simple Red Nomad Ultra Premium. While it doesn’t have gel memory foam like most of the models in our list, it still has a high quality profile with a cooling system. Different from previous models we have seen, Red Nomad made a micropore set of air ducts for this mattress. Red Nomad claims it will release heat and moist even with more efficiency than other kinds of technologies and truth must be said, this pattern reminds the kind that is implemented on regular foam mattresses, even though it makes use of memory foam. This topper is available either on a 2-inch thick or a 3-inch thick version.
Based on the high-rate of this mattress as well as selling numbers, it must be true. Is important to note that, despite it is the most accessible mode fo our list now, that is mostly because this topper is currently on promotional sale by the manufacturer, as its original price is not really a bargain, so you can be sure if you decide for this topper, you are getting something of high quality indeed. Red Nomad also released it in several different bed sizes.
What is a memory foam mattress topper?
These consist basically of one or two layers of memory foam. It’s like you removed the top layers of a memory foam mattress and ditched the rest! You add these few inches of memory foam to your old mattress, and then that acts as the “base” section that you’d see on a full memory foam mattress.
Toppers are a great solution for improving your nighttime comfort without investing in a whole new bed. You can have a memory foam experience on a very low budget, and you can even pile several of them over a mattress for extra comfort.
There are other kinds of toppers available too. Options include the latex topper, which is bouncy and responsive but not as enveloping as memory foam, as well as down, goose and polyester alternative toppers.
Many of these more traditional types of topper work as an extra layer of comfort, and most of them are hypoallergenic and highly breathable, but they won’t offer as well the orthopedic benefits of the memory foam.
What are the benefits of a memory foam mattress topper ?
We can list several of them based on many different factors:
As we said in the beginning of this article, if you are not sure how you are going to deal with these types of mattresses on the long go, or if you can’t afford one right now, a mattress topper of this kind will be a great aid. It costs surely much less than a full mattress.
They will arrive at your house quite compacted, through a vacuum process, and they can as well get back to that state. You will always have the portability of the memory foam with you. They are easily stored and transported, so you can take it to that vacation trip at your parents’ house, budget hotels and other locations and will not suffer with the bad quality of cheap beds.
The comfort quality of this kind of foam is really beyond other kinds of mattresses technologies. Memory foam is the only kind of mattress that is recommended by orthopedists, disposing of a topper of this kind is a way to have the benefits of this kind of pressure reliever technology.
These toppers will last for a long while as memory foam usually does, so they can even be used to boost a bit the life span of your base mattress if it is getting wasted already and loosing its quality.
We all sweat during our sleep, some more than others, but is fact that all our moist ends up either in the air on in our mattress. As memory foam is a material that repels water, compact mattresses of this kind can become tricky to clean with time. When the layers are separated via a topper, you can remove them, clean the base mattress and the topper as well. Is a separate and more accurate process, which will avoid any kind of odors that could be caused by moist retention.
How to Purchase the Best Memory Foam Mattress Topper?
Here things are not so obvious as they seem, but let’s get to the basics of this process.
First of all, you must fit into one of the three categories of weight that categorize how memory foam on toppers work. Is considered low kids and people up to 110lbs, medium people in between 110 and 176lbs and beyond that, heavy. This is important to define so you will be able to find the adequate thickness and density of the memory foam.
Toppers that are 2-inch thick are a no go for heavy people, 3 inches is almost always the way to go for all weights, but only heavy people will benefit of high-density memory foams as it can feel too firm for people light to medium.
Memory foam mattress is supposed to work fine with all kinds of a mattress, but surely mattresses that have a build with standard foams will fit it better than spring mattresses. The former, especially when has its lifespan already wasted, may not be a good experience.
It won’t work to cover your hollowed mattress with memory foam, you will still have a hole in bed to roll to. New spring mattress still may not work very well on the long go.
While these toppers follow universal measures for size, like Queen size, King size, California King, they always will have one or half an inch less on each dimension to acomodate better sheet covers. Check however whether those measures match as the topper must never be bigger than the mattress.
Memory foam material
Gel memory foam is always a superior source of memory foam than the standard viscoelastic one, but often the former feels firmer than the standard memory foam. Here it is a matter of taste on what feel more comfortable for you, also, don’t forget gel memory foam is cooler and works as a breathing and cooling system for the mattress.
Speaking of which, if the topper doesn’t have a gel layer, than the standard memory foam one better have some kind of ventilation, air flow technology to help cool down the topper. In case you don’t know, memory foam mattress Achilles’ heel is the retention of heat and moist, you will sweat and feel hot during your sleep in case the topper doesn’t allow the release of heat.
Why would you use a mattress topper?
They can work like a charm for mattresses that are somehow too hard for your body but are still new and fit to be used. Most memory foam mattresses are made of basic, dense mattress foam, the magic is always in the layers above, made on memory foam of all sorts and/or with egg crate designs to work cleverly distributing weight.
On the other hand, memory foam toppers are excellent both to prevent health conditions due to bad posture as well as to correct and cooperate on physiotherapy to fix such conditions.
Sometimes, due to short budged, is better to just get a memory foam topper rather than a whole memory foam mattress, especially when, once again, the current mattress you use is still in good shape.
Do mattress toppers really work?
The efficiency of a mattress topper depends not only on the product quality itself but also the quality of the mattress. Often many people look for a topper to remedy the bothering situation of a mattress that is not working pleasantly anymore – or never did in the first place.
However, if the bad mattress is still new and doesn’t show deformities, a topper will work well to make it much more comfortable. In the former case though, toppers can’t fix mattress holes or gaps due to long time use and it will not be the solution for your problem.
The main purpose of mattress toppers is to offer an extra support, specially for people who are enduring some health condition, since most mattress toppers are made on therapeutic materials like memory foam or gel memory foam. Before purchasing a mattress topper, be sure your mattress is still fit to be used.
To sum up your guide is important to note that memory foam mattresses often have more clever designs, they are not only about the memory foam layers on top, but how they connect with the rest of the mattress and in between them. Most memory foam mattress toppers are simple, even when comes to aerated patterns, but you get what you pay for as they are much more affordable than a whole mattress and the main benefit, the orthopedic comfort of the memory foam, is still essentially present.
You can check reviews of some great memory foam mattresses here and make your mind about what is more valuable for you.
