Best Umbrella Stroller For Tall Parents
As any taller parent undoubtedly knows, the vast majority of strollers are a pain to use for folks who aren’t average in height. If you’re taller than average, pushing the typical stroller kills your back and neck with every step. That’s especially true of the super-compact models, particularly umbrella strollers. An umbrella stroller isn’t one with an umbrella – it’s one of those strollers that has a fabric seat for the child to sit in. However, most of the models that made this list do include umbrellas since it’s bad for babies and young children to be exposed too much to the sun. These are the least expensive options for many parents and are commonly used for short trips or jaunts to the store.

If you’re a tall parent, you might fear forever having to spend extra money to get a luxury stroller that you can actually move without straining your back and neck.

Don’t worry, though! We’ve put this guide together to show you the best umbrella strollers for tall parents.

Below, you’ll find our recommendations for a few great umbrella strollers which also happen to be taller than average, especially in the handles. This way, you don’t have to fear hurting yourself just from pushing your child around at the park or stopping at the grocery store after picking up the little one from daycare. We haven’t chosen these models solely for their height–they’re simply great umbrella strollers that happen to have another advantage for taller parents.

We looked at a couple of different factors when choosing the best umbrella stroller for tall parents. In general, you’re going to want something that is inexpensive, durable, and able to stand up to the rigors of regular use. Most umbrella strollers also need to be easy to clean since children are so messy and have a tendency to spill any food or beverages they are given. No one wants to put their kid in a stroller covered in melted chocolate, sticky juice, or popsicle stains.

Read on to see which of these strollers make the grade, and to find out which you should buy for you and your child!

Joovy New Groove Ultralight Umbrella Stroller

JOOVY New Groove Ultralight Umbrella Stroller, CharcoalClick for Price

Joovy’s New Groove is a perfect umbrella stroller for taller parents shopping on a tight budget. It’s affordable, practical, and relatively well-equipped for something so inexpensive. As far as height is concerned, it’s just as good as the more expensive UPPAbaby thanks to its 42” handle height. We suggest it to anyone who wants a taller umbrella model under $150.

This particular model has been safety rated to hold children ranging from being newborn to weighing 55 lbs.

Pros:

It’s very affordable. The Joovy usually costs a solid $50 less than the UPPAbaby, depending on sales and price changes. It’s the cheapest decent umbrella stroller we’ve found with high enough handles for folks 6’+.

It’s a lot sturdier than other affordable umbrella strollers. The Joovy has a rugged aluminum frame, and the fabric material is nice and resilient. It’s got a high weight limit, too, since 55 lbs. Is greater than what many young children’s strollers are capable to hold. This is important for tall parents whose kids themselves also tend to be quite large for their age and might be in the upper percentiles of their age group’s height and weight.

It’s well-equipped for what you pay. Most umbrella strollers in this price range are very bare-bones, but the Joovy has a surprising amount of features and amenities. There’s a UPF-50 sunshade, 4-wheel suspension, dual cup holders for parents, and lots of storage pockets for your essentials. Some people have even been able to stuff a diaper bag, drink refills, and an entire day’s worth of snacks and toys in the stroller for those long days spent out running errands or maybe making special trips to the zoo.

Cons:

The Joovy is built much more lightly than the UPPAbaby, and that defintitely comes across in its overall handling. It simply feels cheap, even if it’s not dangerous by any stretch.

UPPAbaby’s folding mechanism is a lot niftier and easier to use. The Joovy’s can be frustrating, even for parents who aren’t mechanically-challenged. That’s par for the course at this price since costs need to be cut somewhere..

UPPAbaby G-LITE Stroller

UPPAbaby G-LITE StrollerClick for Price

UPPAbaby’s G-LITE is one of our all-time favorite strollers. It also happens to be the best umbrella stroller on the market for taller parents! The G-LITE has been updated, and the most recent version is the best yet. They’ve made a couple of changes to the model, making it simpler to fold and push around for parents of all ages.

We love the mesh sling seat material they’ve added for better breathability, and the canopy is supersized for maximum sun protection.  This is great since a lot of strollers tend to include umbrellas that tend to be too small and might leave infants or children’s legs and feet exposed. This means that sunburn and overexposure is still a possibility with most umbrella strollers. But, the UPPAbaby lacks this flaw, which is part of why we determined it’s the best.  All in all, we don’t think there’s a better umbrella stroller out there with 42” handles!

Pros:

Like the Joovy, it’s very comfortable for taller parents to use. The handles are 42” off the ground, so even folks over 6 feet shouldn’t find themselves having to hunch or lean down to push the UPPAbaby around.

It’s sturdier than the Joovy. Everything about the UPPAbaby feels stronger, from the frame to the cupholders and the wheelset. It’s simply higher-quality all over.

We think it handles much better, too. The wheels don’t have any wobble, and the suspension is very impressive for such a lightweight model!

It’s a full 3 pounds lighter than most other strollers on the market, including the Joovy and the Summer Infant.  That’s a massive savings, considering the Joovy is already a lightweight model. What’s most impressive about the UPPAbaby is that they’ve managed to shave so much weight without compromising on quality or sturdiness.

It has lots of amenities and adjustments onboard. In addition to some storage pockets, you also get a larger basket under the seat, which is a rarity on umbrella models! There’s a zipper recline adjustment, super resilient (and stain-resistant) fabric, and cupholders that come off for cleaning.

Cons:

It would make sense for our top pick for taller parents to have taller handles than our budget recommendation. Sadly, that’s not one of the UPPAbaby’s many advantages. It has the same 42” handle height as the Joovy. While these handles are still quite tall and should suit most parents who are on the taller end of the spectrum, this means the UPPAbaby doesn’t have a particular advantage over the Joovy in this regard.

It’s quite pricey, especially for an umbrella stroller. The G-LITE usually costs around $200, depending on the color options and accessories you choose. This is almost twice the amount of other umbrella strollers that offer similar height advantages and other perks.

In order to make this latest model even lighter than the previous generation, UPPAbaby have made one significant design change: the G-LITE doesn’t stand up on its own when it’s folded up. This can make storage difficult if you wanted to keep this stroller in a garage or somewhere without too much space for leaning it up against walls.

We think the difference in weight is worth the trade-off, especially because it makes the whole thing that much more comfortable to carry with the shoulder strap. Still, if having a stroller that stands on its own in the folded position is important to you, the Joovy may be a better choice.

Summer Infant 3D lite Convenience Stroller

Click for Price

The Summer Infant 3D lite Convenience Stroller is one of the tallest umbrella strollers currently on the market, measuring around 43 in. tall. The stroller is made of durable yet lightweight aluminum and includes an adjustable and removable canopy. It’s also one of the least expensive compared to many other models, costing a mere $70 instead of the standard $100 or more.

Pros:

This umbrella stroller comes with numerous benefits, including being 43 in. tall. The handles are designed to be easy to grip and the product includes extra storage space where parents can keep their diaper, grocery, and toy bags while on outings. The storage weight limit is decently high, coming in at 10 lbs.

There is an umbrella and canopy that can be flipped open to protect young children from the harsh UV rays of the sun. The canopy is made from UV resistant materials and tends to be black. It should cover the majority of bigger children and the entirety of small ones such as infants. The canopy is easy to pull open and replace without unnecessary battling with the material.

The seat can be adjusted into four separate positions and includes five point safety protection so children will always be at a comfortable yet secure angle.

The frame of the stroller is easy to fold and carry, weighing in at a small 13 lbs.

The Summer Infant 3D lite can hold children of many shapes and sizes since it is safety rated for kids ranging from newborn weights up to 50 lbs. This is great since many tall parents pass their genes on to their kids, who tend to be in the upper percentiles for height and weight.

Cons:

This stroller is one of the least expensive currently on the market, and some flaws can be seen in its construction. In particular, the four wheels are made of plastic. While they are supposed to be designed not to lock, they can catch easily. Many individuals also reported rapid breakage, especially when using the stroller with heavier children in the seat.

Another problem is that the shade, one of the most essential parts of any stroller, can stick after a couple of uses. When this happens, it’s almost impossible to get the shade to straighten and pull out all of the way, leaving part of the child exposed.

Conclusion

After seeing some of the most intriguing and refreshing umbrella strollers currently on the market, you might be wondering: Which of these models should you buy?

The decision is refreshingly simple. It’s all a matter of deciding how much you can afford to spend. If you can afford the UPPAbaby, we think you should go for it. It’s a better stroller in every regard. It has better ergonomics, better build quality, and more amenities. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Joovy is a good compromise. Its handles are the same height, so it’s no worse in that regard. It’s not as rugged overall, though, and the folding mechanism isn’t as convenient. But, we know that not everyone has money to purchase luxury strollers, especially ones that cost around $200. If you’re really tall, you might be the most comfortable with the Summer Infant. However, the stroller is only a single inch taller than the other models, so you have to decide if the low price is worth some of the practical issues of use, especially since the wheels break easily. The Joovy is also the better choice for parents who know they absolutely want something that stands up on its own when folded. The UPPAbaby won’t do that. If you’re looking for the best umbrella stroller for tall parents overall, we’d have to say that our top pick is the Joovy New Groove Ultralight Umbrella Stroller thanks to its affordable price tag paired with its great convenience.
