Best All-Terrain Stroller Reviews
Baby Jogger 2016 City Mini GT
“Baby Jogger’s City Mini GT isn’t actually a jogging stroller, despite what the name suggests. What it is is a capable, versatile set of wheels for folks who don’t plan on jogging, but want some extra all-terrain features to handle parks, walking paths, and other casual adventuring.
The City Mini GT has a front-wheel suspension system to take the knocks and jolts out of off-road terrain, without any of the bulk you’d see on a jogging model. The wheels are also a nice midpoint between big jogging tires and hard, plastic wheels for going around a city. They’re no-flat tires that have a decent amount of cushion without the hassle of having to pump up inner-tubes.
I think this is a perfect choice for parents who want to be able to go on little adventures to parks, zoos, and walking paths without having to deal with a big, bulky jogging stroller. It’s still nice and compact but handles mixed terrain like a champ. Plus, it’s way more affordable than jogging models! Just don’t expect it to be quite as rugged an adventurer as a BOB.”
BOB Rambler Jogging Stroller
“The BOB Rambler is my recommendation to the average parent looking for an all-terrain stroller. It’s a jogging model, but it also makes a lot of sense for people who don’t plan on jogging at all. Thanks to its big, pneumatic tires and mountain bike suspension, it offers excellent handling and a cushioned ride practically anywhere.
I like the Rambler because it offers the basics of BOB’s jogging strollers without an exorbitant price tag. The Revolution series are cost-prohibitive for many parents, but the Rambler has the same essential format for a much more affordable cost. You get mountain bike suspension, big wheels and excellent handling without going all-out on a premium system.
The Rambler is BOB’s budget model, though. It doesn’t have nearly as much storage space as the Revolution PRO, and the folding mechanism isn’t as nifty. The brakes and suspension are less impressive as well. So, if you want the best of the best in an off-roader, go for the Revolution PRO! Just be prepared for the extra weight and the higher price tag.”
BOB Revolution PRO Jogging Stroller
“The BOB Revolution PRO is my ultimate all-terrain recommendation. It’s based on the same format as the Rambler above, but sees improvements in basically every department. It’s more adjustable, more capable, and more convenient. I think it’s overkill for casual trips to the park and the walking path, but if you want to jog off-piste or do some serious hiking with your child, I think it’s worth the investment.
There are a lot of upgrades coming from the Rambler to the Revolution PRO, but the storage space is probably the one you’ll notice the most. You can fit more of your adventure gear and supplies in this one, without too much extra bulk. I also love the handbrake and suspension, both of which are more capable and more adjustable than on the Rambler.
All in all, this is a phenomenal stroller for all-terrain use. It’s my top jogging recommendation for any surface, so it’s an obvious choice if you want to jog anywhere mixed with your child. It would also be the best choice for serious hikes where you want the most suspension possible.”
Conclusion
Which of these all-terrain strollers should you buy?
The Baby Jogger City Mini GT is the obvious choice if you’re on a tight budget and know you won’t be jogging. If you’re heading off the beaten track, we’d recommend the Baby Jogger 2016 City Mini GT as our best all terrain stroller overall thanks to its strong construction and great mangeability. It’s not quite as rugged an off-roader as the BOB’s, but it handles very well in parks and on paths that aren’t paved. Don’t plan on using this to jog, though, and go for one of the BOB’s if you’re going on especially rough terrain.
The BOB Rambler is a good budget option for joggers who want to go off-piste. It’s also the way to go if you’re looking for a middle ground between the more urban Baby Jogger and the all-out adventurer that is the Revolution Pro.
The BOB Revolution PRO is our recommendation to anyone who wants to jog, walk, and adventure practically anywhere. It’s got the best suspension, the most storage space, and the most rugged design. Just be ready for the price tag. Don’t buy this unless you’re sure you’ll get your money’s worth from it!
Buying Guide
Consider Jogging Models, Even For Walking
Jogging strollers make for the best all-terrain strollers. It’s that simple! They already have tires, suspension, and thicker wheels that are exactly what you need to leave the city streets and strike out on dirt, grass or gravel. While jogging models do tend to be a bit bulkier and heavier, they handle much better than any non-jogging model on rougher terrain. That’s why most of our recommendations in this category are jogging models. Not a jogger? Don’t worry. You’ll still enjoy the improved handling. You child will also appreciate the suspension and tires for the comfort factor.
Don’t Buy Anything Without Tires & Suspension
You may or may not end buying a jogging model, but any all-terrain stroller you buy should include rubber tires and a suspension system of some kind. Hard plastic wheels can do alright around town, but they’re absolutely useless off the pavement. Get something with pneumatic or no-flat tires filled with foam. They don’t have to be monster truck tires, but they should give you some traction on rougher terrain and handle decently without rattling around.
Plan To Make An Investment
You can’t find a decent all-terrain stroller for less than $300. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. With that in mind, you should plan on making a fairly sizeable investment when you buy your new set of wheels. Don’t take chances on cheaper models. They’ll put the safety of your child at risk and be extremely unpleasant for you to deal with as well.
